Static Retinoscopy Flashcards
retinoscopy
the objective procedure using a retinoscope to observe a system of scoping lights and shadows in order to determine a patient’s refractive error
static retinoscopy
refractive state is determined while the patient fixates on an object set at 6m (optical infinity)
dynamic retinoscopy
refractive state is determined while patient fixates on an object closer than 6m (usually at plane of retinoscope)
streak scope
light source is a streak made with a combination of a plane and a concave mirror
SLEEVE DOWN: just plane
SLEEVE UP: plane plus concave mirror
spot scope
light source is a spot and is made from purely plane mirrors
“scoping”
the action of shining light into the eye and using lenses to “neutralize” the light reflex
“neutral”
the appearance of the light within the pupil NOT moving and filling the pupil fully
“streak”/”reflex”
linear beam of light seen within the pupil
working distance
the distance from practitioner is from lenses
50 cm working distance
+2.00 D
67 cm working distance
+1.50 D
Close to neutral reflex
BRIGHT, WIDE, FAST
Farther from neutral
DIM, NARROW, SLOW
Determine sphere power
Start with the the brighter faster wider AGAINST motion or the slower, dimmer, skinnier WITH motion* (with motion always first)
set axis at 90-degrees from streak
Determine Cylinder power
align streak with axis, should always be AGAINST
