Harper’s Ferry - hostility

A

Oct.1859; Motives: establish safe haven for runaways, attack slave owners, seize weapons; without heeding Douglas’s warning, “hero” John Brown attacked Harper’s Ferry, cut telegraph wires, seized arsenal, 60 hostages. Asked slaves to join, but instead was surrounded by citizens. Son shot trying to forfeit. Buchanan heard news, sent Col. Rob Lee. Results: 10 killed, 7 captured, 5 escape, Brown executed.

A

Lawrence is a free soil settlement raided by Ruffians in May 1856. Brown reacts by taking sons and other and killing 5 near PC to “strike terror in the hearts of pro-slavery people”.

A

Pro-slavery Lecompton Constitution rejected in Congress (not by Buchanan) because of the voting fraud. Re-vote in Kansas shows anti-slavery gov’t winning, and Jan 1861 Kansas is a free state.
