Speed and Velocity Flashcards
Define speed.
The distance an object travels during a time interval divided by the time interval. It’s the magnitude of velocity.
What is the slope on a position-time graph?
Average Velocity.
How do you calculate average velocity?
Average Velocity= Displacement/ Time Interval
What is the SI unit for speed?
Metres per second. (m/s)
Define velocity
The displacement of an object during a time interval divided by the time interval.
What does velocity describe?
How fast an object’s position is changing.
iSn’T vElOsItY a VeCtOr?
yes it is :(
Can objects travelling at different speeds have different velocities?
Yes
Remember this
The direction of velocity is the same as the direction of displacement.
Define average velocity.
The rate of change in position for a time interval.
What would the slope mean if ‘forward’ was given a positive direction on a position-time graph?
Positive slope: Object’s average velocity is forward.
Negative Slope: Object’s average velocity is backwards.
Zero means zero
How do you convert km/h to m/s?
km/h * 1000m * 1/3600
When does a chance in velocity occur?
When the speed of an object and/or its direction of motion changes.
How do you calculate the change in velocity?
Final velocity - Initial velocity
What does it mean if the change in velocity has the same sign (+/-) as the initial velocity?
The speed of object is increasing. If the sign is opposite, it means the speed is decreasing.
