SP1z - Motion Flashcards
State the acceleration equation
(Final velocity - initial velocity) / time
In the equation ‘ v^2 - u^2 = 2ax ‘ , what do the symbols mean? (Do not need to learn the equation)
V = final velocity U = initial velocity A = acceleration X = displacement
How do you calculate the distance travelled in a velocity-time graph?
Work out the area under the graph
Describe a method of determining the speed of a moving object in a lab
- set up two light gates so that they measure the time from the first to the second
- measure the distance they are apart
- then set up a shallow ramp so a trolley rolls STEADILY from one light gate to the next
- then do distance divided by time to get the speed of the trolley
What is the speed of sound in air?
About 330m/s to 340m/s depending on temperature
What is the speed of light?
About 300,000,000m/s
What is the value of Earth‘s acceleration due to gravity?
Acceleration in free fall is 10m/s^2
How do you calculate velocity?
Velocity = displacement / time
What is Newton‘s first law?
An object remains in the same state of motion unless a resultant force acts on it
What is Newton’s second law?
Resultant force = mass x acceleration
f = ma
What is Newton‘s third law?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
