SOUND WAVES Flashcards
Explain how sound waves are created.
By vibrations in a medium in the direction
of propagation. The vibrations cause a regular variation in pressure in the
medium.
What type of wave is a sound wave?
longitudinal wave
Explain the relationship between wave speed and the properties of the medium in which the wave travels (gas, liquid or solid)
Sound waves travel faster through solids, than through liquids and faster through liquids, than through air. This is due to the density of the mediums (the particles are closer together).
What is an echo?
When waves hit a boundary they are reflected.
The reflection is different for different mediums.
State the range of audible frequencies.
Between 20 Hz to 20 kHz
