Sebaceous gland [2]
Located close to hair follicles
Produce sebum which acts as a natural conditioner
Pilosebaceous [1]
Refers to hair follicle and accompanying sebaceous gland
Arrector pili [3]
Small muscle attached to hair follicle
Cause hair to stand up as a means to produce heat in cold temp
Goosebumps clased by sudden contraction of arrector pili in skin under emotional stress as part of fight or flight response
Desquamation
Loss of epidermal cells
Erosion
Loss of epidermis
Scaling
Flaking of stratum corneum
Ulcer
Loss of epidermis +/- dermis + possible hypodermis
Erythema [3]
Red colouration of skin
Results from inc. blood flow
Blanches when pressure applied
Erythroderma [3]
Widespread inflammation of skin
Serious complication of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis etc
Potentially life threatening
Purpura [2]
Bleeding that does not blanch
Includes petechial and ecchymoses or bruises which are formed when large amount of blood leaves vessel
Petechial [2]
Smal red/purple skin discolouration
Due to haemorrhage from capillary blood vessels
Dermatome
Region of skin innervated by single spinal nerve
