Macule
Flat, circumcised area, change in color of skin
Ex. Freckles, flat moles (nevi), petechiae
Papule
Elevated, firm, circumscribed area less than 1cm in diameter
Ex. Wart, elevated moles, skin tag, neurofibroma
Plaque
Elevated, firm, and rough lesion, with flat top surface, greater than 1cm
Ex. Psoriasis, eczema
Vesicle
Elevated, circumscribed, superficial (not into dermis), filled with serous fluid; <1cm
Wheal
Elevated irregular shaped areas of cutaneous enema
Ex. Insect bites, allergic reaction, lupus erythematous
Bulla
Vesicle greater than 1cm in diameter filled with clear fluid
Ex. Blister, impetigo, drug rxn
Postule
Elevated, superficial lesion, similar to vesicle but filled with purulent fluid
Ex. Impetigo, acne, herpes simplex
Furuncle
Abscess or boil
Ex. Localized bacterial lesion caused by a staph pathogen
A nodule surrounded by erythema and edema. Profession becomes a pustule and the cone fills with sanguineous purulent exudate
Red, hot and extremely tender
