What are the three main factors associated with skin conditions?
Heat, wind, damp
What characterises heat affecting the skin?
Warm, red, and on bare areas of the body
What characterises wind affecting skin?
Dry, itchy and all over the body
What characterises dampness on the skin?
Fluid from scratching, wet, oily skin
What characterises blood deficiency on skin?
Dryness and itchiness due to lack of nutrition and moisture to the skin
Can cause endogenous wind
Describe the symptoms and causes of Uticaria (hives)
Raised itchy welts on the skin
Commonly wind
Wind-cold or wind-heat (patients reaction to either will determine what it is)
Describe the symptoms and causes of psoriasis?
Thick red scaly patches on the skin that are often itchy and flaky
Heat - redness and inflammation
Wind-heat - rash all over the body
Blood deficiency - dryness and itching
Wind-damp
Often can be heat in the Liver
Stress is also a contributing factor to psoriasis
What are the four types of psoriasis?
Plaque psoriasis - most common. Red, itchy, inflamed, flaky patches
Guttate psoriasis - small drop like red legions across body. From bacterial infection
Inverse psoriasis - smooth red patches in folds of skin. Aggravated by friction and sweat
Pustular psoriasis - white pustules (blisters) surrounded by red skin
Describe the symptoms and causes of eczema
Dry, red, itchy inflamed patches on the skin
Often in elbow creases, knees, and hands
Heat, wind, or damp
Allergy related
Connected to asthma
