Skin And Its Layers Flashcards
What is stratum Corneum?
The outermost layer of the epidermis that is keratinized.
What is the top layer of skin has epithelial tissue, is composed of keratinized stratified squamous, and is purple in color?
Epidermis
What is the second layer of the epidermis, but has living cells and lamellar bodies?
Stratum spinosum
What is stratum basale?
The single bottom layer of the epidermis that contains melanocytes and has a very fast mitosis rate.
What is the layer of the epidermis that starts from the basil lamina and contains adipose, blood vessels, nerves and is made up of dense Irregular tissue?
The dermis.
Hair follicles are located all over the skin in the dermal layer except for?
The hands and feet.
What is Papillae?
Bumps on the top of the dermis layer the reason why we have fingerprints.

Arrector pili
What is a sebaceous gland?
A gland that secretes sebum it is near the hair follicle in the epidermis.
What are the three functions of sebaceous glands?

Describe sweat glands.
Sweat glands are located everywhere mostly and palms, four head, feet, and armpits; sweat is mostly composed of 99% water; and they act as a cooling system.
What does to slough off mean?
Desquamate
What are elastin and collagen fibers of the dermis that are arranged in a pattern
cleavage lines
What is a type of modified sweat gland?
The ears; which produce earwax (which is called Cerumen).
What is the subcutaneous layer
Is part of the hypodermis; lowest section, bone and muscles buying to this; and in females; it is thicker.
