Skin Flashcards
What type of tissue is the epidermis?
A stratifies squamous epithelium.
What is the skin?
An organ.
What are the 3 layers of the skin?
epidermis (above),
dermis,
hypodermis.
What tissues make up the skin?
Connective,
epithelial,
muscle
and nervous.
What are keratinocytes?
Epidermal skin cells, barrier against environmental damage.
What are the functions of the epidermis?
creates a waterproof barrier.
What are the functions of the dermis?
UV protection,
energy storage,
Sensory information.
What type of tissue is the epidermis?
epithelial tissue,
stratified squamous.
Keratinising.
What type of tissue is the dermis?
Connective tissue - gives structural strength.
What do melanocytes do?
Formation of pigment.
What do Langerhans do?
Immune surveillance
What are merkel cells?
touch receptors
How many layers make up the epidermis? What are they called, from bottom to top?
5
Stratum Basale
Straytum spinosum
Stratum Granulosum
Stratum Lucidum
Stratum corneum (closest to surface)
What is keratinisation?
Production of keratin. Cells move up from basale layer until they die. keratin produced in stratum granulosum.
What are the two layers of the dermis?
Papillary(above) and Reticular(deeper).
