Simple Sentences
A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb. It consists of one independent clause, a single complete thought.
Eg. The baby cried for food.
Baby - subject
Cried - verb
Compound Sentences
A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses. The two independent clauses are connected through a conjunction.
Eg. Chenaya ate a salad bowl but Isuri ate a chocolate bar.
Ind. clause 1: Ind. clause 2:
Chenaya - subject but - conjunction Isuri - subject
Ate - verb Ate - verb
Complex Sentences
A sentence consisting of one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses (a dependent clause does not express a complete thought).
Eg. Opinionated women are given disadvantages in societies that privilege male accomplishments.
Ind. clause:
Women - subject That - conjunction
Given - verb
Compound - Complex Sentences
A sentence consisting of two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
Eg. After the two soccer players lost their game, they joined their other teammates for lunch, and they went to the movies.
Dep. clause:
After the two soccer players lost their game,
