Q

briefly describe shape and support

A

bones form framework to support your body and the different lengths and thickness of the bones determine the shape

Q

briefly describe protection

A

surrounds the areas that are delicate and could get damaged (skull protects brain)

Q

briefly describe movement

A

muscles are firmly attached to your skeleton. muscles work by contracting and pulling on your bones to make them move

Q

briefly describe blood protection

A

bones make blood cells in the marrow cavity and spongey bone. these cells are then used to transport gases around the body

Q

what are long bones

A

bones in upper and lower arms and legs, the collar bone, the ribs, the metacarpals. these act as levers for large movements

Q

what are short bones

A

carpals
wrist
tarsals of feet
provide movement where it is needed in lots of directions but also give stength

Q

what are flat bones

A

scapula
pelvis
cranium
protect delicate organs and give big surface area for muscle attachment

Q

difference between cartilage, ligament and tendon

A

cartilage- smooth +slippery connective tissue that protects the ends of the bone where it meets other bones and stops them rubbing together
Ligament- connective tissue that connect bone to bone
Tendon- connective tissue that connect muscle to bone

Q

name 3 different types of joints and give an example of each

A

fixed or immobile- cannot move at all (skull joints)
Slightly movable joints- can only move a little (joints between ribs or vertebrae)
synovial joints- bones are freely moveable (elbow, hips, shoulder)

16
Q

hyper extesion

A

when a movement occurs beyond its normal joint range

17
Q

abduction

A

the joint causes the bone to move away from the midline of body

18
Q

adduction

A

bringing the bone towards the midline of body

19
Q

circumduction

A

a circular movement which combine flexion abduction extension and adduction all together

20
Q

rotation

A

moving a joint about its axis or center

21
Q

supnation

A

movement is external or away from midline of body

22
Q

pronation

A

movement is internal and towards midline of body

23
Q

inversion

A

sole of the foot is turned so that the inside of foot off the ground

24
Q

eversion

A

the outerborder of the foot is off the ground
