Simple Molecular Substances Flashcards
1
Q
What are molecules held together by?
A
Weak intermolecular forces
2
Q
Are simple molecular substances usually made of nonmetals?
A
Yes! Except for BeCl2
3
Q
Do simple molecular substances usually conduct electricity?
A
No they usually don’t conduct electricity
4
Q
What is a 3D shape determined by?
A
Number of lone and bonding pairs of electrons around the central atom
5
Q
When finding out the 3D shape, where do you get the electrons from?
A
You find the number of electrons from what group they are in!
E.g. Cl has 7 , as it’s in group 7
6
Q
How are double covalent bonds formed?
A
If a group 6 atom is connected to the central atom, it will often connect with a double bond.
