Simple Machines Flashcards
If the load is in the middle what type of lever is it?
3 rd
How do we find the mechanical advantage?
Load divided the effort
What is the law of levers (in text book)?
(load x length arm = effort x length of effort arm) when lever is balanced
Were is the load on a second class lever?
Middle
What two parts might make a pulley?
Wheel and Wire
What are the three main types of Pulleys?
Fixed, Movable, and Compound
How do Pulleys make work easier?
The Pulley System makes it easier to lift an object than lifting the dead weight by hand. A single pulley essentially changes the direction of the pull or force applied.
What is the principle of a Pulley?
When one end of the rope is pulled downwards, the load on the other end of the rope is pulled upward. The direction of force is changed from downwards to upwards
Analyse common resistance a wheel suffers from?
Friction. Friction “is the resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another. It is not a fundamental force, like gravity or electromagnetism”
How can you find the velocity ratio of a wheel and axel?
Divide the larger radius by the smaller radius (R/r)
The wheel turns with less force but over a greater distance when…
The input force is applied to the axle
What is the Velocity ratio of a pulley if the wheel has a radius of 27cm and the axle has a diameter of 18cm?
Velocity ratio = 9 - Radius of axle = (18/2) therefore VR=(27/9)
What force(s) are involved in an Inclined Plane?
Gravitational and Normal Force
To work out the mechanical advantage of a wedge you…
Divide the length of the wedge by its length.
A wedge is made up out of…
Two inclined planes that converge at a point.
