Shoulder adn elbow problems Flashcards
What proportion of shoulder dislocations are anterior vs posterior?
90% anterior, 9% posterior, 1% inferior.
What is the most common cause of a posterior diso=location>
electric shock or siezure
Have studies shown any difference in conservative vs surgical management?
no
What is a reverse shoulder prosthesis?
instead of the head of the humerous being a ball and sitting into a socket, theb glenoid is now convex and there si a concave head of the humerous. Allows deltoid to compensate for any loss of rotator cuff strength
What is a labrum?
It is the fibrocartilage surrounding the glenoid and so making the socket deeper.
What can cause instability of the shoulder following dislocation?
a tear of the glenoid labrum
Young or old people are llikely to have recurrant dislocations?
Young, in older people they stiffen up a lot
Subacromial impingement is caused by what?
down growth of the acromion (osteophytes grow down and start to cause inflammation and irritation of the bursa above the supraspinatus. meaning less joint space and eventually the acromioclavicular ligament willl impinge aswell.
Sympotoms of subacrombial impingement?
Pain and stiffness in a middle painful arc (middle part)
Treatment of subacromial impingement?
Steriods. Physiotherapy, often in sore shoulder scapular will be protracted. This then means that if ohysio is then completed to help retract the shoulder should make it easier to abduct.
Types of Adhesive capsulitis?
(Frozen shoulder) - idiopathic and secondary (post traumatic)
Middle aged elbow problems
Tendinopathies (Golfers and tennis elbow)
What is cubital tunnel syndrome?
Pressure or stretching of the ulnar nerve (typically as it passes the medial condyle)
-Present at any age
Golfers vs tennis elbow
Golfers is on the inside (flexors) and tennis is on the outside (laterally, extensors, more common)
Tendonitis around the elbow treatment options (golfers/tennis elbow)
NSAIDS, rest, physio
Sometimes steroid injections
