Short and Long Term Memory Flashcards
What is coding and what types of coding are there?
Coding is the way in which information is changed so that it can be stored in memory after entering through the senses.
- Visual (pictures)
- Acoustic (sounds)
- Semantic (meaning of experience)
What is duration?
A measure of how long memory lasts before it is not longer available
What is long term memory? What is the coding, duration and capacity?
Long-term memory is for that have happened in the past.
Duration - unlimited
Capacity - unlimited
Coding- mainly semantically
What is short term memory? What is the capacity, duration and coding?
Short term memory is for immediate events and is measured in seconds and minutes.
Duration - 2-20 seconds
Capacity - 4 items/chunks
Coding - acoustically
What is capacity?
The measure of how much can be held in memory
Who was Jacobs?
Jacobs digit span-9.3 for numbers 7.3 for letters
Who was Miller?
7+-2 items/ chunks remembered
Who was cowan?
4 chunks the limit for letters, numbers and visual information
Who was Simon?
Larger chunks mean fewer recalled
Who was Jacobs?
19 year olds have a bigger span than 8 year olds
Who were Peterson and Peterson?
Use of consonant syllables preventing verbal reasoning STM lasted 18 seconds
Who was Bahrick et Al?
After 48 years participants were 70% accurate in face recognition and 30% for names
Who was reitman?
Auditory tones to avoid displacement led to longer duration of STM
Who was Nairne et Al?
Duration for STM lasted 96 seconds
Who was Baddeley?
Difficulty remembering acoustically similar words in STM but not LTM
