Sexual reproduction In Humans Flashcards
What do Sertoli cells do?
Nourish the sperm
Protect spermatozoa from immune system
What do leydig cells do?
Secrete testosterone
Where does spermatogenisis occur?
Seminiferous tubule
What is a polar body?
Uneven distribution of the cytoplasm
What stage does meiosis stop at until puberty?
Prophase 1
How is a secondary oocyte formed?
Once a month, puberty, primary oocyte resumes meiosis 1 and finishes it
What is the follicle called that the secondary oocyte is contained in?
Graafian follicule
When does the rest of meiosis occur for the secondary oocyte?
If fertilisation occurs
What is the process called where the zygote undergoes repeated miotic divisions to form a blastocysts?
Cleavage
Why is the process called cleavage?
Because the number of cells is increasing but no increase in size
What is implantation?
Blastocyst moves into uterus where it attaches and sinks into endometrium
What does the trophoblast divide into?
Chorion (chronic vili)
Amnion (amniotic sac and amniotic fluid)
What does chronic vili do?
Secretes HCG
Large SA:V to absorb oxygen, aa, glucose
What is the role of the amnion?
Shock absorber and keeps skin moist
What does FSH do?
Stimulate follicule maturation, stimulates oestrogen production
