Site is the piece of land where the settlement is built
What is Situation
Situation is the location of the settlement
Explain the term temporary settlement
They are not living there permanently but will be staying there for the time being
Explain the term permanent settlement
They have planned to remain in one place forever (fixed location)
What is subsistence farming
Provide food for the family and not for sale
What is commercial farming
Produce food to sell to the markets and shops
Give the definition of land use zones
Cities get divided into zones that are dominant in that zone
Name the types of land zones and give at least one example
Commercial-area that has businesses that provide a service or who retail/ eg- CBD + OBD + shopping centers\
Industrial-secondary activities like factories
Residential- Areas in the city where people live
Services & infrastructure-government offices and spaces in the city for the public.
Where are land use zones found?
They are only found in Urban areas
Name the economic activities, give a definition and a example.
Primary- extracts raw materials out of the earth. Eg- forestry, mining + fishing
Secondary-transforms the raw materials into goods. Eg- processing,manufacturing+construction
Tertiary- provides services and commercial services. Eg- school teacher,hairdressers and shops.
Quaternary- research and information technology. Eg- genetics researcher.
Explain a rural settlement
They are situated in the countryside, away from large towns and city’s, most people are involved in primary activities e.g. Farming,fishing and mining.
What is a urban settlement
They are built-up areas like a city or town
What is a settlement?
Where people live work and interact with one another
Give the advantages and disadvantages of a nucleated settlement
Advantages- help is available in times of trouble
- they can borrow machinery
Disadvantages- land is too small to expand farm
- noisy
- can’t make own decisions
Give the advantages and disadvantages of a dispersed settlement
Advantages- make own decisions -more land to farm -more quiet Disadvantages- shortage of social contact -can't rely on community for help -Requires a large amount of capital

Central business district
What is the location of the CBD
- large and often tall buildings
- transport routes from surrounding areas meet
What characteristics of the CBD
- oldest part of the city
- streets form a grid pattern
- big businesses tend to Locate their head offices here in buildings
What does OBD stand for
Outlying business district
What is the location of the OBD
Away from the CBD
What is the characteristic of the OBD
-these OBD develop as urban areas expand, businesses need to be closer to residential areas

-close to main freeways
What is the characteristics of the regional shopping centers
- easily accessible
- edge of residential areas
