set 1 Flashcards
What is energy?
the ability to do work
How is energy measured?
joules
What is the conservation of energy law?
The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed
What is the difference between Energy transformation VS energy transfer
Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one location to another. Energy transformation is when energy changes from one type to another
What is the problem with energy transformation? (why is it not 100%)
wasted energy occurs when energy is being transformed
Explain the energy transformation when you turn on a fan switch
When we switch on a fan, the fan converts a significant portion of the electrical energy into kinetic energy of the fan blades. Some part of electric energy is converted into heat.
What are the three types of heat transfer?
conduction, radiation, and convection.
Explain how conduction, radiation and convection works
In conduction, heat transfer occurs between objects by direct contact. In convection, the heat transfer is done through gas or liquids. In radiation heat travels via waves
What are some examples of conduction, radiation and convection?
Conduction: Heat transfers into your hands as you hold a hot cup of coffee.
Convection :Hot air rising above a fire.
Radiation: Reheating a cold cup of coffee in a microwave oven.
Which one needs contact?
Conduction
