Seperating Mixtures Flashcards
Define solute and give example
A substance that dissolves is called a solute.
Example: salt or sugar
Define solvent and give example
A substance that dissolves other substances is called a solvent.
Example: water
Define soluble and give example
If a substance can dissolve, it is called soluble.
Examples: sugar or salt
Define insoluble and give example
If a substance doesn’t dissolve, it is called insoluble.
Example: sand
What method is used to separate sand and water mixture?
Filtration
What method is used to separate out salt from water?
Evaporation
Distillation allows us to separate liquids based on which property of the liquids?
Boiling points
What is the boiling point of pure water?
100∞C
What is the job of the condenser in distillation?
To condense gases into liquids
Name the state change in going from liquid to gas
Evaporation
Name two processes involved in distillation
Boiling/Evaporation and Condensation
Describe how chromatography is used to separate dyes in an ink.
Different dyes move up the chromatography paper at a different rate, leading to separation.
In chromatography, why is the line called the origin drawn using a pencil?
Pencil is insoluble in the solvent
