Simple sentences - Requires a finite verb - Is typically only verb in independent clause

Eg. Hope is happy

Complement Clauses
Clauses can be embedded within other clauses

Functional element - contains a complementizer eg. that, if, whether

When a grammatical sentence, which includes a noun/noun phrase and a verb, might or might not contain another sentence
