Selective Polishing, Fluoride Application, D-Sense, Oraqix Flashcards
5 variables to consider
abrasiveness
quantity
contact time
speed
pressure
benefits
extrinsic stain management
supragingival plaque biofilm removal
precautions needed
use a special polishing agent on restored tooth surfaces, such as composite, bonding, glass ionomer, porcelain, gold, or titanium
particle impaction risk immediately after deep scaling, periodontal debridement or root planing with gingival tissues may be irritated
contraindications
absence of stain
newly erupted teeth
enamel hypocalcification or hypoplasia
enamel demineralization and active carious lesions
areas of recession where cementum or dentin is exposed
areas of dentinal hypersensitivity
acute gingival or periodontal inflammation
allergy to ingredients in paste
indications for restorations
use least abrasive prophylaxis paste available
not recommended for implants
components for polishing
wrapped handpiece cassette
floss
prophy paste
what should you do after polishing
FLOSS
fluoride varnish indications for use
increased caries risk (aids in remineralization process, can put on active caries), orthodontic patients, recession (aids in dental hypersensitivity), xerostomia, low fluoride exposure, children under 6
after application instructions of fluoride varnish
instruct patient that teeth will feel like they have a coating or film
avoid hard foods, drinking host or alcoholic beverages, brushing, flossing the teeth until next day or at least 4-6 hr after application
fluoride trays after application instructions
tilt head forward to remove tray
request patient to spit for several minutes
do not allow patient to swallow
use gauze to wipe excess gel or foam from teeth
use high-power suction to draw out saliva and gel
instruct patient that for 30 minutes they should not rinse, eat, drink, brush teeth
fluoride trays application
2 ml product in trays
white top, blue bottom
ensure tooth surfaces are dry
blue inserted first, place saliva ejector in mouth, have them hold in place then insert top white tray
wait for 4 minutes
what is in D-Sense
calcium oxalate and potassium nitrate ions
what is D-Sense for
dentinal hypersensitivity
indications for D-Sense use
noncarious cervical lesions
under crowns and bridges, when a standard cement is used
on any exposed dentin surface, such as the margins around temporary crowns
before and after tooth bleaching
under restorations gingival recession
before and after prophy
D-Sense application
check syringe flow
proceed to apply for 20 seconds to desired surface
dry area with light airflow to ensure the product is properly set
