What impact does the increasing use of computers have on climate change
A negative one as computers need energy to run which harms the environment
What are the ways that we can reduce energy usage
Reduce brightness on monitors, avoid using a screen saver, auto power down monitor if not in used for a period of time, Use standby / sleep / hibernate mode to reduce power to the computer when not in use
Describe how reducing brightness help reduce energy consumption
Because having high brightness uses a lot of energy
Describe how avoiding using a screen saver helps reduce energy usage
The computer needs energy to store the screen saver so without it will save on energy
Describe how setting the computer to auto power down if not in use helps reduce energy usage
We will not be using unneeded energy
Describe how putting the computer into standby mode while it’s not in use helps to reduce energy usage
Standby mode needs less energy to operate
What is a firewall
It protects the network against unauthorised access
How does the firewall do this
It has a set of rules which it checks against incoming packages to see if they are authorised to be in
What is encryption
When someone sends something to another computer a key is made and the text is jumbled up so if intercepted without the key it’s unrecognisable. The key takes a different route than the message but both end up at the recipient of the message so that the message can be understood
