learn the basics of existential therapy
Existential therapy
focus is on concepts that are universally applicable to humans such as death, freedom, responsibility, meaning of life, and existential isolation.
existentialism
a field of philosophy concerned with the nature of human existence, freedom and how to live authentically in the world.
Phenomenology
an approach that concentrates on the study of consciousness and the objects of direct experience from the first-person perspective.
Existential crisis
a time of emotional disturbance caused by confrontations with existential givens such as death and meaningless
Logotherapy
a form of existential therapy developed by Victor Frankl, is primarily concerned with the search for meaning
bad faith
a term used by satre to describe those who live inauthentically: acting according to narrow social roles instead of their own will.

facts about the nature of human existence that generates existential angst: death freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness.
What are the four branches of existential therapy?

yalom’s theory of death
oblivion, nothingness; the inevitable. the inescapable, uncontrollable and unpredictable fate that annihilates our existence, the finitude and fragility of our lives, our own mortality
yalom theory of freedom & responsibility
humans can only be free when we take full responsibility for our choices; but the breadth of freedom we have and the weight of responsibility it implies creates anxiety. freedom brings with it a heavy burden: we are presented with a near-infinite choices at every moment of our lives each choice sets us down a path that excludes all other paths, we never know which choice is correct and will produce the best outcomes
meaninglessness
the lack of objective meaning urpose ,or value to human life.Humans must find meaning in their suffereing. Humans need a reason to live.
existential isolation
The unbridgeable gulf between oneself and any other being. Existential therapists are interested in how people bridge this gulf and the modes of relation they use to engage with others.
