-scottish land was difficult to grow on
-increasing population = increasing competition for jobs
-fishing,linden and kelp industries all failed which meant mass unemployment
/highland landowners kicked drifters off their land to make way for more profitable sheep or hunting and thus left drifters unemployed and homeless
reasons for scottish emigration pull
-gold rushes offer the chance to become rich quickly
/higher wages are available abroad job were to widely available for labourers and skilled workers
-highlands and island emigration society helped emigrants settle abroad. british women’s emigration society helped middle class women emigrate
-land is plentiful in the new world
-in usa and canada it can be purchased with available loans
-family and friends already abroad sent letters home and encouraged people to move. already areas with lots of scots living there
-some emigrated to help spread their religion
-invention of steamship made travel cheaper and faster
