Science (structure 🏦) Flashcards
What is natural?
Things that are naturally made, like human, animals, plants and more.
What is manufactured/man-made?
Things that are created by humans, like houses, buildings, phones and more.
What is origin?
How something was created
What is design form?
How a structure is built, like mass structure, frame structure, shell structure or a combination of them.
What is function?
What are the 3 categories of materials?
Composite, Layered and Woven/knit
What is Composite?
What is it? - A combination of 2 or more materials blended together.
When do you need it/use it? - When you need to combine properties of different things.
Examples - Concrete, metal, alloys and plastic
What is Layered?
What is it? - Different materials glued or pressed together (laminate)
When do you need it/use it? - When you need durability
Examples - Desktop, tetrapak and drywall
What is Woven/kit?
- Most likely to be made of a single material (thread/yarn)
- Soft, warm, flexible
Examples - Blanket, mitten, fabric
Mass
- Made by pilling up materials into a shape or design
Ex:
Natural - Mountains, Coral reef
Manufactured - Baked Goods, pyramid, brick wall
Frame
- A very sturdy structure, often quite tall
Ex:
Natural - Spider web, skeleton, trees
Manufactured - Tennis Racket
Shell
- Has a thin outer layer
Ex:
Natural - Egg, turtle shell, shell
Manufactured - Egg cartons, canoe, box
What is a structure
Something that has a definite shape, has a different size and has a job/purpose,function and can withstand forces.
