science exam (chemistry) Flashcards
what is matter?
anything that takes up space (has volume and mass)
pure substances (element and compound)
element: cannot be broken down
compound: is made up of two or more substances
mixtures (heterogenous and homogenous)
heterogenous: it is harder to pull apart (ex. Jello)
homogenous: it is easy to pull apart (ex. pizza)
calculating PEN
P= atomic number
E: atomic mass
N: Mass# - Atomic #
periods and groups
periods: up and down
groups: side to side
what are metals, non-metals, and metalloids
Metals: located on the left side of the staircase. Malleable, ductile
Non-metals: located on the right side of the staircase. can be gas, liquid, or room temp
Metalloids: located along the staircase
chemical families (Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, noble gases)
Alkali metals: group 1
alkaline earth metals: group 2
halogens: group 17
noble gases: group 18
Space questions:
what planets are terrestrial and gas
Terrestrial: earth, mars, mercury, and venus
Gas: jupiter, saturn, neptune, and uranus
What is the general order of the planets
mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune
Canada’s contributions to space exploration and technology
canada has collaborated with ESA and NASA
