Found Lake Victoria (which he named). Was temporarily blind when at Lake Tanganyika. Because surveying equipment was lost, ruined, or stolen, he was unable to take bearings of Lake properly and therefore Burton contested his findings. They were going to have a hearing about this in London but then he died from a self-inflicted gunshot- wound.
