SC1 Flashcards
states of matter
what are the three states of matter? give an example
solid, liquid and gas. ice, water and steam.
what is the arrangement of gas particles, and the movement of the particles?
the particles are arranged randomly and far apart. they are fast in all directions
what is the arrangement of liquid particles, and the movement of the particles?
the particles are arranged randomly and close together. they move around each other
what is the arrangement of solid particles, and the movement of the particles?
the particles are arranged regular and close together, they vibrate about fixed positions
what are state changes?
physical changes, they can be reversed and the chemical properties of the substance do not change. this because the particles themselves do not change, only their arrangement.
how does solid change to liquid?
melting
how does liquid change to gas?
evaporation and boiling
how does gas change to liquid?
condensing
how does liquid change to solid?
freezing
how does solid change to gas?
sublimination
how does gas change to solid
deposition
what is the energy of particles in a solid?
low
what is the energy of particles in a liquid?
greater than a solid
what is energy of particles in a gas?
high
