Adjectives vs Adverbs
Adjectives modify only nouns
Adverbs modify anything but a plain noun
Essential vs Nonessential Modifier
Nonessential Modifier is one that does not change the meaning of sentence (Turn left on the Mayberry street, and stop at the first house, which is red)
Essential Modifier - Modifier that changes meaning that is eliminated (Turn left on Mayberry Street, and stop at the first house that is red)
-ing vs -ed, when it is a noun modifier vs. Adverbial
Noun: An ing mod without a comma is a noun modifier
Adverbial: A comma -ing mod is an adverbial mod. The comma could be before the mod or after or both
It is the same for -ed
Noun: An -ed mod without a comma is a noun modifier
Adverbial: A comma -ed mod is an adverbial mod. The comma could be before the mod or after or both
Note an adverbial modifier can notify an entire clause
Which vs. -ing, what is the difference
, which modifies the noun that is closest to it, while , -ing is an adveribal modifier so it modifies anything but a noun
