What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers
What are the 6 endocrine glands?

What do the ovaries and testes produce?
ovaries = oestrogen and progesterone testes = testosterone
In the pancreas some cells produce insulin, what do the other cells produce?
Glucagon
What is the organ called that is targeted by a particular hormone?
A target organ
What is the definition of ‘metabolic rate’?
The rate at which the energy stored in your food is transferred by all the reactions that are taking place in your body.
What hormone affects metabolic rate?
Thyroxine
What happens when your adrenal gland produces adrenaline?
- your heart contracts more rapidly, increasing heart rate
- blood vessel diameter increase ps so more blood can flow to the muscles quicker
- liver cells change glycogen to glucose and releases it into the blood, increasing blood sugar concentration
What hormones control the menstrual cycle?
Oestrogen and progesterone
Around which day does oestrogen peak in the menstrual cycle?
Day 14
What hormone peaks at around 18 to 25 days in the menstrual cycle?
Progesterone
Where are the hormones FSH and LH produced?
The pituitary gland
What does FSH do?
Stimulates growth and maturation of eggs
What does LH trigger?
Ovulation
Why is clomifiene therapy useful for those that cant conceive?
Clomifiene is a drug that helps to increase the production of FSH and LH
