Sb3 Flashcards
What are the advantages of asexual reproduction
It’s much faster because you don’t need a mate
Why is meiosis different to mitosis
Mitosis produces diploid cells and meiosis produces haploid gametes
Describe the process of meiosis
Each chromosome replicates and remains attached making each chromosome look like an eggs
They then pair up and separate into two new cells.
Then the two copies of the Kromozone in each X shape splits into two more cells made out of 1/2 of chromosome from each pair
This ends up producing four haploid daughter cells that are genetically different which explains why brothers and sisters don’t look identical
What is mitosis
The cycle of growth and repair of cells
How many cells are produced at the end of mitosis
Two

Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokinesis
Describe interphase
The cell carries out its function and makes copies of it chromosomes and extra ribosomes and mitochondria
Describe prophase
Nucleus breaks down and spindle fibres appear
Describe metaphase
Chromosomes lineup up on the spindle fibres
Describe anaphase
Chromosome copies are separated and moved to the ends of the cell
Describe telophase
Membrane forms around the DNA to make nuclei
Describe cytokinesis
The membrane separates and two cells are made
How do cancer tumours happen
Changes in the cells can turn them into cancer cells which means that they undergo uncontrollable mitosis. This produces lumps of cells called tumours
