rule utilitarianism Flashcards
argues we should always follow the rule that will lead to the greatest _______ of ____ over ____
- balance
- good
- evil
argues that his general principle of liberty, leades to the greatest _______ _________
The needs of the general good outweight any individual issues [with e.g. drink or drugs]
- general happiness
The problem with rule is that it places preservation of the rule above individual need, in the case of his theory of libertyโฆ
he is reluctant to prevent individual harm, simply because the rule of maximising liberty shld be adhered to for the ggh:

another issue is that if it is difficult to calculate the good in an individual case, how much more difficult will it be to have confidence that adherence to a given general rule will always have a better outcome than other possibilites?
we know that always keeping to the general rule of maximising liberty or always telling the truth will have some unfortunatoe outcomes for indiv. but itโs doubtful we can ever be certain that following the general rule will necessarily lead to greatest balance of good over evil
