1936
What agreement formalised the Axis and tied them closer in 1939?
Pact of Steel
Where was the term Rome Berlin Axis first used?
In a speech by Mussolini in Milan in November 1936
How would the understanding benefit both nations foreign policy plans?
By allowing Italy the Med, while Germany could have a free hand in the rest of Europe
The Rome Berlin Axis was created following which event, that brought the nations together?
Spanish Civil War
Mussolini regarded it as an alliance against who?
Both the Allies and the Soviets
Did this mean a point of no return for Mussolini in who he’d side with?
No because Mussolini himself sided with Hitler in order to impress or even frighten the allies to force their hand in becoming allies with him. Mussolini later signed the friendship pact with Britain in 1938, which still gave hope an alliance could be formed and also showed that he had not fully turned his back on the idea of this alliance.
Which Pact followed the Rome Berlin Axis in 1937 which saw them unite even more against a foreign power?
The Anti-Comintern Pact
Who benefitted more in the creation of the Axis?
Mussolini’s aim in forming the Axis was to scare the allies into potentially making steps to ally with him, and if not grant him free roam in the Med due to Hitler’s interests lying more in mainland Europe. Mussolini ultimately got neither an alliance with Britain or benefit from having free roam in the Med, while Hitler pulled Mussolini closer to him and further from the allies.
The new friendship between the two nations meant Mussolini did nothing in reaction to what in 1938?
Austrian invasion
(Anschluss)
