Rocks And Building Materials Flashcards
what is limestone mainly made of?
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)
limestone powder mixed with clay creates what material?
cement
how do we make concrete from cement?
Water, cement, sand and crushed rock.
breaking down a chemical by heating is called what?
Thermal decomposition.
Calcium oxide is often produced in what piece of equipment?
Rotary kiln
how does a rotary kiln function?
we fill the kiln with crushed limestone and heat it strongly using a supply of hot air. this then produces Calcium oxide (which comes out the bottom) and the waste product carbon dioxide leaves through the top.
how do you test for lime water?
blow through a tube, if it goes cloudy (white precipitate) then it’s like water (it reacts with CO2)
when we add water to calcium oxide what do we get?
calcium hydroxide.
calcium oxide heated makes what?
calcium oxide + CO2
calcium oxide + water = what?
calcium hydroxide
calcium hydroxide + more water and filter
calcium hydroxide solution (limewater)
limewater + CO2
calcium carbonate
calcium hydroxide is an alkali, what industry uses it and for what?
farmers use it to neutralise their soil
limestone quarrying is controversial, why?
it creates a huge whole in the ground.
