Rocks Flashcards
How are rocks different from each other?
Hardness
Texture (How they feel)
Colour
Mineral content
Name 3 different groups of rocks
Igneous
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
How are igneous rocks formed
When lava/magma cools and solidifies which can happen above or below the surface
Examples of Igneous rocks
Basalt , Granite
How are sedimentary rocks formed
Formed when particles of rocks, dead plants and animals(Fossils). These were deposited on the sea floor and over time layers of this material are compressed and cemented together creating solid rock
Examples of sedimentary rock
Limestone , Sandstone
How are metamorphic rocks formed
Formed from rocks that already exist(Sedimentary + Igneous).Formed when these 2 are changed into harder rocks from great heat or pressure.
Examples of metamorphic rock
Quartzite,Marble
What colour is basalt
Grey/Black colour
Basalt’s texture
Medium grained
Do basalts have small/big crystals. Why?
They have small crystal because they cool/harden very quickly
Where can basalt be found
It can be found in Antrim/Derry plateau. Giant’s Causeway which is part of the plateau
What can basalt be used for
Road chippings
What colour is Granite
Black to cream
What type of texture does a Granite have
Coarse grained
Do Granites have small/big crystals. Why?
They have big crystals because they cool/harden slowly
Where can Granite be found
It can be found in the Wicklow mountains
What can Granite be used for
Worktops,fireplaces
What colour is limestone
grey coloured rock
Name characteristics of a limestone
Permeable (Water can pass through it)
Can be weathered down
Where can limestone be found
The Burren Co. Clare
What can limestone be used for
Monuments , Buildings and can be used to improve soil fertility
What colour is sandstone
Reddish coloured
What’s the sandstone texture
It’s coarse in texture
