Rocks Flashcards
What is a sedimentary rock
- Sedimentary rocks are formed from pre-existing rocks or pieces of once-living organisms. They form from deposits that accumulate on the Earthβs surface. Sedimentary rocks often have distinctive layering.
e.g. sandstone
Features are:
Different layers of rock
What is an igneous rock
- Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
E.g. granite
Features are:
Igneous rocks contain randomly arranged interlocking crystals.
Metamorphic rock
- Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock to new types of rock, in a process called metamorphism.
E.g. slate
Features are:
They are crystalline and often have a squashed texture
What is the rock cycle
Igneous rock β> weathering + erosion β> sediment β> compact or cementation β> sedimentary rock β> heat and pressure β> metamorphic rock β> molting β> magma β> cooling β> igneous rock
What is the structure of the earth?
Crust-Earthβs crust is a thin shell on the outside of Earth
Mantle-the earths thickest layer
Outer core-The outer core, about 2,200 kilometers thick, is mostly composed of liquid iron and nickel
Inner core-The inner core is the fourth layer inside the Earth. It is a solid metallic ball made mainly of iron
