RNA types / Polymerases / Regions Flashcards
What RNAs can catalyze biochemical reactions?
Ribozymes
Which type of RNAs are intermediates between DNA and protein?
Messenger - mRNAs
What are the functional RNAs? (7)
tRNAs
rRNAs
snRNAs
miRNAs
siRNAs ^ piRNAs
lncRNAs
Transfer RNAs :
Bring the correct amino acid to mRNAs during translation
Ribosomal RNAs
Components of ribosomes that guide the assembly of amino acid chains
Small nuclear RNAs:
snRNAs
Play a role in processing of RNA transcripts
Micro RNAs:
miRNAs
Play a role in regulating transcript levels and translation
Small interfering RNAs and piwi-interacting RNAs
siRNAs & piRNAs
Inhibit viruses and transposons, and may serve other functions
Long noncoding RNAs
lncRNAs
Not well understood
What does DNA pol I do?
Catalyzes growth 5’ to 3’
Removes mismatched bases 3’ to 5’
Degrades single strands 5’ to 3’
What does DNA pol III do?
What does DNA pol I do after?
DNA ligase after?
After primase lays down primers, DNA pol III elongates them.
DNA pol I will degrade the primers and fill in the gaps
DNA ligase seals the nicks where primers used to be
How many RNA pols do eukaryotes have?
3
What does RNA pol I transcribe?
All dRNAs except 5s
What does RNA pol II transcribe?
All mRNA
What does RNA pol III transcribe?
tRNAs
5s rRNA
and other small RNAs
