What are naturalistic observations
takes place in the setting or context which the behaviour would usually occur
what is a controlled observation
watching and recording behaviour within a structured environment
- there is some control over variables and also control over extraneous variables
what are covert observations
participant’s behaviour is watched and recorded without their knowledge or consent
what are overt observations
participant’s behaviour is watched and recorded with their knowledge and consent.
what is participant observation
the researcher becomes a member of the group who they are watching
what is non-participant observation
the researcher remains outside the group whose behaviour they are watching
how can a covert observation remain ethical
it must be public and happening anyway
how does an overt observation remain ethical
participant gives informed consent beforehand
