RM: Statistical testing Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of statistical testing
A
- enables us to determine whether or not a hypotheses should be accepted or rejected
- tells us whether differences/relationships between variables are statistically significant or have occurred by chance.
2
Q
what is a sign test
A
can determine whether the difference we have found is significant or not.
3
Q
when do we use the sign test
A
- There is a test of difference
- repeated measures design used
- need nominal data
4
Q
what does it mean if the experimental hypothesis is accepted when the probability is 0.05
A
there is less than a 5% probability the results occurred by chance
- can be 95% sure the difference was found because of the manipulation of the IV on the DV
5
Q
what is the calculated value
A
this is the number the researcher is left when the statistical test has been calculated
