RM experimental design Flashcards
What is experimental design referring to?
how participants are used in experiments
What is an independent groups design
when separate groups of participants experience different conditions in the experiment
strengths of independent groups
- order effects are no longer an issue
limitations of independent groups
- less economical as more participants are needed to produce the same data as repeated measures
- participants who are in the groups are not the same, so the mean differences could be because of individual differences
what is a repeated measures design
participants experience both conditions of the experiment
Strengths of repeated measures
- participants variables are controlled
- economical as less participants are needed
limitations of repeated measures
- order effects occur because repeating tasks could create boredom or fatigue which may cause issues in the 2nd task
- participants ability may improve through practice
- demand characteristics occur as participants may figure out the aims of the study
What is a matched pairs design
participants are paired together on variables relevant to the experiment
- one participant from each pair is allocated to a different condition
strengths of matched pairs
- order effects and demand characteristics are less of an issue as participants take part in one condition
limitations of matched pairs
matching people may be time consuming and possibly expensive, making this method less economical
