What is chronic illness?
an illness that develops slowly and worsens over a longer period of time
Ex. Heart disease, diabetes, arthritis
What is terminal illness?
an illness that cannot be cured and will likely lead to someones death
Ex. Cancer, Dementia, Parkinson’s disease
Team nursing
A team of nursing staff is led by an RN.
Ex. One unit has one RN, one LPN, and one CNA to work as a team to care for a group of patients.
Functional nursing
Focuses on tasks and jobs, Each nursing team member is assigned certain tasks and jobs.
Ex. One nurse gives all drugs, Another gives all treatments. CNA’s give baths, make beds, and serve meals.
Patient-Focused Care
Services are moved from departments to the bedside.
Ex. Patient is on bedrest and OT, PT, and radiologist gives care at the bedside.
Primary Nursing
Nurse is responsible for the person’s total care.
Ex. Nurse have to pass meds, do treatment, take showers or bed bath.
Occupational Therapist (OT)
Assist person with Activities of Daily Living (ADL)
Ex. An OT helps a senior citizen to get themselves dressed independently
Physical Therapist
Assists ill and injured persons with movement, pain management, and rehabilitation.
Ex. A person recovering from a broken ankle goes to see a PT every week.
Dietitian
Asesses and plans for nutritional needs promote health and manage disease.
Ex. A Dietitian might teach a client with diabetes how to plan meals to improve and balance the person’s blood sugar.
Social Worker
Deals with social. emotional, and environmental issues affecting illness and recovery.
Ex. When a baby is leaving the NICU the social worker may help the mom apply for WIC if needed.
Podiatrist
Prevents, diagnoses, and treats foot, ankle, and lower leg problems.
Ex. A person sprains their ankle playing basketball and will need to be seen by a podiatrist.
Speech therapist
Diagnoses and treats communication and swallowing disorders.
Ex. A person with a stuttering problem may see a speech therapist to improve speech.
Audiologist
Treats hearing, balance and ear problems
Ex. Someone with hearing loss may visit a audiologist
Physician
Diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries
Ex. Someone with stomach pain will be seen by a physician to be diagnosed and treated for it.
Nursing Assistant
Assist nurses and gives care. Supervised by a licensed nurse
Ex. CNA assists nurse with taking vitals, bed baths, and feeding patients.
