Responding, Maintaining, Surviving Flashcards
List three receptors and identify the stimulus to which each receptor responds
- Thermoreceptor (heat)
- Photoreceptor (light)
- Chemoreceptor (chemicals)
Anything that activates a response in sensory nerve receptors or in the endocrine system
Stimulus
The brain and spinal cord
Central nervous system (CNS)
All parts of the nervous system except the CNS
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
A single nerve cell
Neuron
A bundle of neurons
Nerves
A structure or organ that brings about a response. (Eg: muscles)
Effector
Identify two methods used to transmit a signal along and between neurons
1 electrical signals (within a neurone) 2 chemicals (between neurones)
A tiny gap separating to neurons
Synapse
A chemical that diffuses across a synapse to transmit a message between neurones
Neurotransmitter
A chemical produced by a gland or organ that produces an affect on another part of the body
Hormone
A collection of glands of an organism that secrete hormones directly into the circulatory system to be carried towards a distant target organ
Endocrine system
Identify the parts of the Endocrine system
Pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries, testes.
The bodies ability to maintain a stable and constant equilibrium despite changes in the external environment.
Homeostasis
A series of steps undertaken by your body to counteract a stimulus so as to maintain homeostasis
Negative feedback
