Antigen
Microbes and foreign substances that elicit immune response
Antibody
Protein produced by the body in response to an antigen; used interchangeably with the term immunoglobulin
Allergen
A substance to which the body mounts a hypersensitivity response
Leukotrienes
Chemical mediator of inflammation stored and released by mast cells; effects are similar to those of histamine
Histamine
Chemical released by mast cells in response to an antigen that causes dilation of blood vessels, bronchoconstriction, tissue swelling and itching.
Antihistamine
A drug or other compound that inhibits the physiological effects of histamine, used especially in the treatment of allergies
Antitussive
Drug used to suppress cough
Decongestant
Drug used to relieve nasal congestion
Expectorant
Drug used to increase bronchial secretions
Rhinitis
Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, caused by a virus infection (common cold) or by an allergic reaction (hay fever)
Mucolytic
Drug used to loosen thick mucus
Pruritis
Itching associated with dry, scaly skin
