Respiratory System Flashcards
Functions of the respiratory system
To supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
Gives us energy we need in sport
Pathway of air
Nose/ mouth Trachea Lungs Bronchi Bronchioles alveoli
Where does gaseous exchange take place
It takes place at the alveoli. These are tiny air sacks in our lungs. When you breath in they will with air this is where oxygen is transferred into the blood stream
Why are capillary close to the alveoli
So that diffusion distance is short
What muscles are used in the process of breathing
Intercostal and diaphragm
What is tidal volume
The volume of air inspired or expired per breath
What is breathing rate
The number of breaths per minute
What is minute ventilation
The amount of air a person breaths out in a minute
Breathing rate x tidal volume = minute ventilation
Wht is aerobic respiration
Exercise that can be maintained for long periods of time.
Moderate intensity for long duration
Glucose + oxygen -> energy + carbon dioxide + water
What’s anaerobic respiration
High intensity exercise for short amount of time. Exercise in the absence of oxygen.
Glucose -> energy + lactic acid
Components of the respiratory system
The air passages
Lungs
Diaphragm
What is oxygen debt
After intense exercise the body needs O2 to remove lactic acid and get back to normal. It cannot supply it therefore is in oxygen debt
