respiratory system Flashcards
what are the features of the nostrils?
air from the environment enters the nasal passages through them
what are the features and functions of the nasal passages?
the hair and mucous layer on the walls of nostils trap dust and foreign particles. the air gets warmed and moistened
what are the features/functions of the pharynx
it is a throat area with openings to the trachea + oesophagus
what is the feature of the larynx
it is a cartilaginous structure that contains elastic vocal cords
what are the features/functions of the trachea
it contains c-shaped rings of cartilage, preventing the trachea from collapsing. it also helps to keep the airways open
what are the features/functions of the bronchi?
the bronchi is a branch of the trachea
what are the features/functions of the inner walls of trachea + bronchi?
the goblet cells secret mucus that trap dust and bacteria in the air. cilliated cells have cillia that sweep particles into the pharynx
what are the features/functions of the lungs?
the branched tubes in the lungs divide repeatedly forming bronchioles that end in cluster of air sacs called alveoli
what are the features/functions of the alveoli?
they are the sites of gaseous exchange. numerous alveoli increase surface area for this exchange, they are well supplied with a network of blood capillaries. the surface is cooled with a thin film of water and the epithelium is one cell thick
what is mucus?
mucus is a sticky substance produced by goblet cells that trap dust and bacteria that are inhaled in the air
what is cillia?
cillia is a hair-like structure found on epithelial cells, that sweep mucus containing dust and bacteria upwards and out of the airways
