Respiratory system Flashcards
Whats the main purpose of the respiratory system
to move fresh air into your body while removing waste gases
What are the first four organs in the respiratory system
nose, trachea,
bronchus, bronchiole
what are the last three organs in the digestive systems
lung containing alveoli, diaphragm, intercostal muscles
Outline the function of the nose in the respiratory system
It allows air to enter your body, then filters debris and warms and moistens the air.
Outline the function of the trachea in the respiratory system.
the trachea is a tube/pipe that transports air from your oesophagus to your bronchi
Outline the function of the bronchus in the respiratory system
The bronchi help moisturize the air you breathe and screen out foreign particles
Outline the function of the bronchiole in the respiratory system.
to deliver air to a diffuse network of around 300 million alveoli in the lungs.
Outline the function of the lungs in the respiratory system.
allow oxygen in the air to be taken into the body, while also letting the body get rid of carbon dioxide in the air breathed out
Outline the function of the diaphragm in the respiratory system.
Upon inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens and the chest cavity enlarges. This contraction creates a vacuum, which pulls air into the lungs. Upon exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and returns to its domelike shape, and air is forced out of the lungs
Outline the function of the intercoastal muscles in the respiratory system.
The internal intercostals pull down on the rib cage and push air out of the lungs.
list three adaptations of alveoli
Moist walls - gases dissolve in the moisture helping them to pass across the gas exchange surface. Permeable walls - allow gases to pass through. Good blood supply - ensuring oxygen rich blood is taken away from the lungs and carbon dioxide rich blood is taken to the lungs.
describe the mechanism of breathing
Explain how gas exchange in the alveolus occurs by diffusion
