Respiratory System Flashcards
Nasal cavity
Filters, warms and moistens air
-nose hairs catch dust particles
Orals cavity
Takes in air but doesn’t warm, moisten or filter it
Pharynx
Path for food and air - branches into trachea and esophagus
Known as the voice box and produces sound
Larynx
Known as the windpipe where air passes from larynx to bronchi
Trachea
Lungs
Main organ and site of gas exchange (o2 in Co2 out)
Ribs
Protect the lungs
-expands on inhalation
-contracts on exhalation
Muscle that separates the chest (thoracic cavity) and abdominal cavity and controls breathing
-contracts on inhalation
-relaxes on exhalation
Diaphragm
Bronchi
Two large branches of the trachea that move air to and from the lungs
Bronchiole
Many small tubes leading from the bronchi to alveoli
Alveolus
Air sac that is the site of gas exchange in the lungs
Hemoglobin
Oxygen is carried by hemoglobin (oxyhemoglobin) in red blood cells to wherever it is needed in the body (tissue cells)
Tidal volume
Amount of air that is regularly breathed in and out
The amount of air that remains in the lungs after maximum exhalation
Residual volume
Pathway of air
Nose, trachea, bronchi, lungs
