Lungs
What is Asthma
“Chronic Inflammatory disease of the airway”
What are some symptoms of Asthma cause
SOB
Chest tightness
Cough

What are five kinds of Respiratory medication
- MDI
- Spacer
- Diskus
- Turbuhaler
- Nebulizer
What does MDI stand for?
Metered Device Inhaler
How does a MDI function
Pressurized Canister within a plastic actuating device
What is the Proper MDI technique
- Start to inhale and press down firmly on the top of the canister

- Shake well
- Exhale Fully and draw breath
- Head back and tongue down
- Container upright and teeth then lips around mouthpiece
How does a Spacer device function
allows medicated particles to float freely in the chamber increasing the amount of medication that reaches the lung tissue
Who would use a spacer
Children and those with SOB difficulty using a MDI
What is another name for the Spacer Device
Aerochamber
What is the proper technique to use a spacer
- Shake well in/out of spacer
- Mask covering nose and mouth (adult/pediatric/infant)
- Mouthpiece of spacer is like MDI
- Inhale through mouth (deeply 2 times or normally six times)

What is a Diskus
Medication in extremely find powder form within device
How to prepare to use a Diskus
- Load dose- open and slide lever (do not shake)
- Exhale fully away from diskus
- head back and tongue down (creates straighter passage to lungs)
- Mouthpiece to lips as per MDI
What is the proper technique to use a Diskus
- Draw in deep steady breath (does not have propellent)
- Hold breath for 5 to 10 seconds
- exhale slowly
- second dose. repeat
What is the function of a Turbuhaler
Solid, cylindrical form. a Dose of medication is provided by turning the bottom
contains dry powder medication
How to prepare to use a Turbuhaler
- Load dose- hold upright and turn clockwise then counter-clockwise until hear click
- exhale fully away from device
- Head back and tongue down
- mouthpiece to lips as per MDI
Proper technique to use Turbuhaler
- Draw in deep steady breath (no propellent in tube)
- Hold breath for 5-10 seconds
- exhale slowly
- second dose. (repeat all steps)
What is the function of a nebulizer
Changes medication from liquid to a fine mist for easy inhalation
how long does a patient usually inhales for with a nebulizer
10-15 minutes
What is the function of a pump nasel spray
pump action spray in a liquid form (shake gently to mix but prevent bubbles)

- Blow Nose
- Shake container gently
- hold one nostril down, insert applicator into other nostril, and aim tip outward
- head back, press down on the pump and gently sniff
What is another term for systemic corticosteroids
Steroidal Anti Infammatory
What is the function of systemic corticosteroids
decrease tissue inflammation and mucous production in lungs
For severe asthmatic attacks or allergive rhinitis
How long does someone usually take Systemic corticosteroids for?
usually up to 2 weeks. starting does is high and tapers down
Two major side effects of Systemic Corticosteroids
Stomach irritation
insomnia
What is the function of Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist
Decrease asthmatic events by preventing bronchoconstriction
two types of smoking cessation aids
Burpropion-zyban
varenicline- champix
