Respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration
Oxygen is needed
Happens in plants and animals
Happens inside mitochondria
Most efficient way to transfer energy ——> glucose
Word equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose+ oxygen ——-> carbon dioxide
Chemical equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ———> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is anaerobic respiration
Happens when there is not enough oxygen
An incomplete breakdown of glucose, which makes lactic acid
Does not transfer much oxygen so is only useful in emergencies
Word equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose——-> lactic acid
Word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants
Glucose—————> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is the fancy name for anaerobic respiration in plants
Fermentation
When does anaerobic resporation happen
When ur muscles need more energy to contract
Therefore breathing rate and breath volume increases bc ur body cannot get enough oxygen
What does anaerobic respiration lead to
Oxygen debt (after youve stopped exercising)
What is an oxygen debt
It is the amount of oxygen needed to remove the built up lactic acid from the cells
How do you reduce the oxygen debt
Have to keep breathing hard after you stop exercising to get back the oxygen into the blood
What is the definition of respiration
The process of transferring energy from glucose which goes on in every cell
What happens with metabolism in the liver
Lactic acid is taken to the liver through the blood
What happens after metabolism in the liver, when the lactic acid is taken to the liver
-it is oxidised into CO2 and water
-It is converted to glucose and then glycogen
